Two dice sit on the bar menu’s leather cover. On the back-bar shelf, a dog and an armchair wait between the bitters bottles, each barely an inch tall — a board game abandoned mid-turn. This bar hands you a character for the night, off a shelf or out of a glass. Chall Gray, Jay Sanders and Lucia Gray already had Little Jumbo, in Montford, when they took over 797 Haywood Road — a 1922 storefront, most recently Alley Cat Social Club. They gutted it and put in new windows; Gray described the result as “somewhat like finding your way into a classic Hollywood red-sauce hangout through a psychedelic-tinged library.” It opened in the last week of August 2024. Library carrels line one wall, half-circle booths another, and a mirrored, forest-mural parlor up front takes its own reservations.
The theme doesn’t stop at the top of the menu, so even the shot-and-a-beer section reads like a card catalog. Bukowski’s Dinner puts a Hamm’s beside a shot of Old Overholt rye — say it out loud, Ham on Rye. Under the Volcano stands a bottle of Imperial next to a shot of tequila, roughly the plot of the Malcolm Lowry novel it borrows its name from. Fridays and Saturdays, Finest Deli sends dinner across the street; the order is a code scanned at the table.
A library carrel seats exactly one, which might be the kindest thing a bar has done for a date that isn’t going well. Dice & Discipline — cucumber-serrano, lime, ginger cordial, no alcohol — is proof the theme reaches past the paperbacks. Claim a carrel if you want to vanish. Take the booth if you’d rather be found.
