A downtown Asheville jazz listening room where local players keep the ticket money, behind a gate on North Lexington.
Red velvet curtains hang behind the players, against exposed brick, in a historic basement behind a gate at 56 N Lexington, between Virtue Boutique and Dane Wells Gallery. That listening room is what Hotel Eve is built around. Liz Williams opened it in December 2025 and hosts the weekend shows herself. Despite the name, there are no guest rooms.
The band plays two sets a night, an early one and a late one. You can reserve a table ahead or grab a ticket at the door, but plan ahead for Fridays: the early set has sold out more than once.
Local Asheville players share the calendar with players from New York and New Orleans. Don Mikkelsen, a trombonist who has worked with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, has led a quartet here. Musicians come back with their own projects, too. Melissa McKinney curates The Queen Sessions on Wednesdays, Asheville vocalists honoring Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. Joe Enright hosts The Composer’s Room one Thursday a month. There are tribute nights too, for Nina Simone and Sonny Rollins.
Local jazz artists keep every dollar of the ticket money, backed by a living-wage guarantee. Working Asheville musicians and artists can ask the host for an Art Pass.
The bar is two lists. Old Souls are the house’s own, several named for people, like The Caulfield, gin with shiitake, olive and pickle. Spirit Tributes are other bartenders’ drinks, credited by bartender and city: Penicillin is Sam Ross of Milk & Honey, New York.

Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archeologist exploring synthesized sounds, texture, and rhythm using an acoustic cello. The core of her work is solo performance with live looping, layering cello parts and vocal lines. Rhythmic figures emerge with bowed or plucked ostinatos or a variety of rubbing and slapping on the body of the cello, then enhanced with melodies played or sung in her haunting alto.
