Pillar Rooftop Bar

Wednesday night on the roof at Pillar is $10 for a pound of wings and $5 house wine; Thursday drops to $10 for a short list of classics — Martini, French 75, Old Fashioned, Cosmopolitan. The bar sits on the sixth floor of the Hilton Garden Inn at 309 College Street; Pillar Kitchen, in the lobby downstairs, supplies the food. A living wall holds the bar’s sign, and lights are strung end to end above the patio. The seating is a run of repurposed wine barrels next to a kiosk-sized bar pouring the cocktail list to order, the Blue Ridge running out past the railing. There’s a fire pit for cold nights, but the terrace itself only runs when the weather cooperates. Ten cocktails work the list, priced fifteen to eighteen dollars; four of them — Rose Colored Glasses, Moonlit Indigo, Fortune’s Favor, the Paper Crane — arrive finished in luster dust, which reads as either whimsy or a photo cue depending which side of the bar you’re standing on. The Tipsy Pig pairs Buffalo Trace bourbon with candy bacon and a curl of smoke; Take a Hike sets Siete Misterios mezcal against ten-year tawny port and chipotle honey. Live music plays Fridays and Saturdays — Soul Blue and the Caribbean Cowboys have both had the room — and the calendar runs seasonal takeovers on top of that: a Tiki Takeover in summer, Rudolph’s Rooftop when it turns cold.
