Fifty-four seats over the original floorboards, named for a bartender who wanted drinks poured fast.

Sunday nights end in trivia here; Wednesday nights end in board games. DumbAshe Trivia runs the Sunday quiz for a shot at bar credit that tops out around fifty dollars, and the games come out again on Wednesdays, boards and dice and cards laid along the tables. Chall Gray and Jay Sanders opened Little Jumbo at 241 Broadway on November 7, 2017, fifty-four seats split between a front banquette, low and high tables, and the bar itself, over the original battered floorboards. Gray took the bar’s name from Harry Johnson, the nineteenth-century bartender whose 1882 manual argued a drink should come out fast and a guest should be looked after. The menu runs nine sections deep. The Old Fashioneds alone come four ways, an 1870s build and a 1930s one among them. The Martini Club follows, and two drinks get pages built for sharing — a Manhattan Service, a Japanese Highball — each one poured for two. Elsewhere the names do the talking: Tattletale, Creature Negroni, Midnight Bouquet, the last one built on añejo tequila and mezcal, finished with grapefruit bitters. The snack plate — olives, tomato confit, marinated mushrooms — landed on the menu this August, borrowed from what Character Study already had. The walls are exposed brick, hung with art that rotates, under a run of vintage furniture. Card games run long some Wednesdays. Go on a Wednesday if trivia isn’t your speed — the cards keep going until somebody decides they’re done.

Hands down my favorite cocktail bar in Asheville. You can tell they care a lot about their craft! The tropilachia pop up in February is also incredible. The theming and care is over the top and the Jungle Cat is one of my favorite cocktails of all time.
