Fifty-four seats over the original floorboards, named for a bartender who wanted drinks poured fast.
The name is an argument. Harry Johnson published a bartender’s manual in 1882 insisting a drink should come out fast and a guest should be looked after, and in 2017 Chall Gray put that man’s name over the door. Fifty-four seats make it checkable. Gray and Jay Sanders split them at 241 Broadway between a front banquette, low and high tables, and the bar itself, over the floorboards the building already had. A room that size cannot hide a slow bar.
The list is longer than the room suggests. Old Fashioneds get a section to themselves, an 1870’s build and a 1930’s one. Treating sixty years of drift as a menu category tells you what they think is interesting. Tattletale sets Dalmore 12 and Laphroaig against honey and Angostura. The Manhattan Service and the Japanese Highball for Two are each poured for a pair, the one place the bar slows itself down on purpose.
Sundays end in a DumbAshe Trivia quiz and Wednesdays in board games. The brick is exposed and the art on it changes. The room is serious about the drinks and not at all about itself. That is the part Johnson would have recognized.

Hands down my favorite cocktail bar in Asheville. You can tell they care a lot about their craft! The tropilachia pop up in February is also incredible. The theming and care is over the top and the Jungle Cat is one of my favorite cocktails of all time.
