The Observatory Rooftop Bar & Lounge

Blue-and-white bistro chairs and marble-topped tables fill the patio under a line of cone-shaded string lights. Past the glass railing, downtown Asheville drops away toward the Blue Ridge. The room seats fifty at most — 1,000 square feet, six floors up on The Restoration Hotel at 68 Patton Avenue. The hotel opened in spring 2023 on the site of a demolished Bank of America branch across from Pritchard Park, and it has a sister property in Charleston. The hotel’s restaurants are built to draw people who never book a room upstairs. Valet idles out front because so many of them don’t plan to. This is a downtown bar that happens to sit on a hotel roof, not a hotel amenity that happens to have a view. Inside, past the bar, frosted glass globes hang from macramé slings among ferns and trailing vines clipped into black planters under bare ductwork. Bartenders work the marble bar in tropical-print aprons. A costume anywhere else in town; ordinary six floors up. Local musicians play the patio some evenings. The Restoration Old Fashioned borrows the hotel’s name outright: private-barrel high-proof bourbon, demerara, bitters. The Pebbles & Bam Bam sets vodka, sloe gin and Italicus against a rim of crushed Fruity Pebbles. The Strawberry Fields Forever cuts jalapeño tequila with charred strawberry and Tajín. On warm afternoons, the menu’s spritz flight covers four: Aperol, pomegranate, limoncello, Hugo. Come for the view. Stay because nobody up here is checking your room number.
