ASHEVILLE, NC
The Times Bar
A 1928 Douglas Ellington building on the National Register, coffee counter first.
Douglas Ellington finished the S&W Building in 1928 — arched windows, terra cotta panels, a parapet trimmed in green and blue tile — and it went onto the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The Times Bar occupies that building now, at 56 Patton Avenue: a coffee counter by day, then a 21-and-up cocktail bar after it, no reservations, first-come-first-served seating. The list splits into four sections — 90s Cocktails, Caffeinated, Features, Throwbacks — and runs $11 to $16. A $13 How Bizarre pairs watermelon radish cordial with Uncle Val’s botanical gin and Fentimans tonic; an $11 Toki Black Highball is Japanese whiskey, soda and a lemon twist; a $16 Half Nelson stacks bourbon, zucca rabarbaro, amontillado sherry and smoke. The Triple Crown is a Paper Plane riff — bourbon, Amaro Montenegro, grapefruit liqueur, lemon — and the Asteroid Blues runs kiwi and Averna over Gosling’s dark rum. From the Throwbacks section, the Into the Wild steeps Earl Grey and ginger into Zubrowka bisongrass vodka with lavender and Angostura bitters, and the Smells Like Green Spirit is oat-milk clarified: absinthe, Ardbeg, Planteray OFTD. On the caffeinated side, a Carajillo pairs Licor 43 with espresso and an orange twist, and a $15 Espresso Martini rounds it out with vodka and Amarula cream liqueur. Tuesday breaks the pattern — no coffee that day, cocktails only. Come in daylight for the coffee side of the room; after dark it runs on proof and amaro instead.
