A mural of live oaks and a white-columned house covers the wall behind the bandstand, and on a music night a band sets up in front of it. The backbar is a carved wooden arch with a smaller arch inset at its center, bottles stacked three deep across the rest of the shelving. Casey Campfield, its owner when Mountain Xpress wrote about the bar in 2016, had spent three years before that, 2005 to 2008, managing a bar called Joli Rouge. Meschiya Lake and the Moodswingers brought New Orleans jazz and blues on a Saturday in mid-August; the following Friday and Saturday, back to back, brought honky-tonk from Hearts Gone South and then jazz-and-burlesque from Adrianne Blanks & the Oracles — three genres inside eight days, music at 8:30 each time. A Mountain Xpress writer called it “an insane amount of booze for such a small space” back in 2016. The Top Shelf list keeps its own kind of patience: one original spends four months in an ex-bourbon cask before it’s poured, another swaps the usual rye for Hibiki Harmony in a Manhattan. Fire Walk with Me, Osaka Manhattan, Sazerac Forte. The calendar barely lets up, which turns “live music tonight” into more of a standing appointment than a special occasion.

Solid cocktails, solid — if not a bit dusty — environment. Not a cocktail bar I’m rushing back to, but a solid option no less.
