Fifty years a metalworking studio, now neon, palm fronds and racks of rum.

For fifty years the room was a metalworking studio; now it is neon, palm fronds, and racks of rum. Chris Frosaker, a co-owner, got obsessed with tiki bars and drinks during the pandemic; by 2023 that became Tiki Easy Bar, 2,500 square feet at 197 Hilliard Ave, behind Hi-Wire Brewing’s South Slope taproom. Tropical animal calls loop through the speakers between songs. The mugs are handmade locally, by artists Jason Rojas and Allison Cochran, and the bar sells a house rum under its own name too. More than fifty tropical cocktails run the list: Scorpion Bowl, Jungle Bird on Acid, Manta Ray, plus frozen boat drinks and shareable bowls built for the table. Prices run nine to seventeen dollars across it, before the rare pours start. The Test Pilot follows Donn Beach’s original 1941 recipe: dark rum, Cointreau, velvet falernum, lime, Pernod, bitters. A 1963 British Royal Navy rum, aged under British government bond, pours by the ounce for two hundred dollars — a few stools down, a frozen piña colada runs twelve. A ten-seat Rum Club meets the fourth Thursday and Sunday of each month, working through rarer pours still, Haitian clairin and Martinique rhum agricole among them, for fifty to a hundred forty-five dollars a session. A private room in back can be booked for groups. Reserve ahead — ten seats a session go quickly.

    One of my favorite spots in Asheville for a cocktail. Plenty of seeting, amazing large format drinks, with something for everyone. Atmospheric!
