District 42

District 42 takes its name from the 42 lots that once ran along Biltmore and Broadway avenues. The bar occupies the ground floor of the Kimpton Hotel Arras at 7 Patton Avenue, on the building’s southeast corner, off Pack Square. Bargello, the hotel’s Mediterranean dining room, holds down one end of the building; District 42 holds the other — tables and soft seating around the bar, with a patio off the back. The list runs from a clarified-rye Skyview finished with a red wine float to a Miso Mai-Tai built on miso caramel and orgeat. The Rain Shadow pours a McKibbon-barrel Codigo reposado over grapefruit and rosemary, and the Smoky Mountain floats an IPA over tequila, mezcal, and lime. The Cure leans on Chemist Gin and Herbal Revenge Liqueur, cut with lime, apricot, and Luxardo, and the KM Spritz pairs vodka and cherry with lime, citrus soda, and a pour of Blanc de Blanc. Dessert cocktails get their own heading on the menu — Mamacita, a Sorbet & Sparkling, and the Banana Bread at Work, built on brown butter bourbon and carrying a dairy warning most cocktails never need. Cocktails run sixteen to twenty dollars, and Thursdays bring the twenty-dollar Girl Dinner special — a dirty martini, a Caesar salad, fries — which has run at least since July. Order the Skyview for the room’s most ambitious pour, or the Appalachian Old Fashioned — Dickel rye, Drambuie, rosemary, honey — for something closer to a classic.
